When inside jokes go too far

August 20, 2008

It all started with a headline seen on Huffington Post, whose premise was ludicrous enough for me to tweet about:

Headline: “Barack Obama: Egghead?” Compared to who? Other people who *didn’t* teach Constitutional law?

I discussed it a bit with my friend Blom. Eventually it devolved into searching Google images for “Egghead” yielding us such goodies as these:

The second photo, of course, is endlessly fascinating. The caption below read “Egghead from Batman”. From Batman, eh? They must be talking of the 60s series with Adam West. A quick search on YouTube proved me right and I found one of the best things I’ve ever witnessed on video, Batman TV Show-Egghead Part 2.

Egghead is the abominable bad guy, with a huge cranium and whom has eggs-and-bacon wallpaper. Blom pointed out that Egghead is played by Vincent Price!

The episode is rife with terrible egg puns from Egghead and others (like “Prepare yourself for an egg-speditious defeat!”, which was so good even Batman took notice “That’s very apt, Robin”). After watching a few minutes I couldn’t believe how many egg puns were even possible.

There’s also a character called Chief Chicken, presumably an Indian Chief given that he wears a headdress, but any similarity ends there. His “accent” drifts in and out and varies from Dutch to Indian (as in India, not Native American). He also compliments another person for not being an “Indian giver”. The shit they got away with in the 60s!

Anyway, as the video continued I caught a few wonderful lines that were to good to keep to myself. Blom and I cut up the video and sent clips of “You, Chicken, turned chicken?”, “This is an acid egg, Batman. One move and I’ll drop it on Robin’s head!”, and many others back and forth. We were giggling like idiots, and simply couldn’t stop.

At some point I decided to create a remix, which includes only two quotes, but they’re simply the best. The remix even spawned a website, You Chicken, turned chicken?!, where you can hear the song and get in on the ground floor of this wonderful, if not idiotic, inside joke.
